Spay/Neuter
Spay:
Spaying is a surgical procedure for the sterilization of female dogs and cats (and
other pets such as rabbits, rats, etc).
It is best if this procedure is done before your pet goes through its first “heat”
especially in the case of dogs. Early spaying of dogs reduces significantly the chances
of that dog developing breast cancer at an older age.
Spaying will prevent the development of pyometra (see below) which can be a life-
threatening condition.
Neuter:
Neuter is a surgical procedure for the sterilization of male dogs and cats (and other
pets such as rabbits, rats, etc).
This procedure is often done for the following reasons:
1. Cut-down on unwanted pregnancies
2.Reduce certain types of aggressive behavior
3.Curtail “humping” behavior of male dogs.
4.Reduce the occurrence of prostate cancer.
5.Treatment for BPH (Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy): one of the causes of
blood in urine of dogs
